Berkeley, Calif.-----San Jose State University's Adriana Vogt led all players with three goals, but the University of California defeated the Spartans, 10-5, in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) women's water polo opener for both teams.
Bridget McKee and Janessa Schmidbauer scored the other two goals for #11-San Jose State (7-5, 0-1 MPSF). Vogt's three scores gives her a team-leading 17 for the season and marked the third time in 2010 she has scored more than once in a match.
The MPSF's leading scorer, Cal's Emily Csikos, and Breda Vosters, each scored twice for the Golden Bears (10-1, 1-0 MPSF).
The Spartans had plenty of chances to score. California's Stephanie Peckham made 11 saves. San Jose State goalkeeper Meagan Minson was credited with six stops.
"Our effort was there. Our players played hard and hda a better understanding of what we wanted to do," said San Jose State head coach Lou Tully. "We had plenty of opportunities to score, but we didn't shoot well.
"I thought we did a good job of not turning the ball over, but our 6-on-5 needs work. We were 2-for-8. Anything under 50 percent is not where it needs to be."
The Spartans return to action, Saturday, February 20, for their home opener against #1-ranked Stanford. Match time is 12:00 p.m. at The Aquatics Center. There is no admission charge.
