Spartans Take 7th At Stanford invitational

Stanford, Calif.-----Dani Curran scored four times and goalkeeper Meagan Minson was credited with nine saves as #9-San Jose State defeated #15-Indiana, 10-6, in the seventh place match of the Stanford Invitational women's water polo tournament.

Curran was the only Spartan to score in all four matches in the two-day, eight-team tournament. Her 10 goals give her 26 for the season - second best on the team.

"The women played well against Indiana (2-7). We said, 'we have pride. Let's get this thing done.' Nobody was down. Our attitude was good. We got their better players in foul trouble and gave it everything we could," said San Jose State coach Lou Tully about the Spartans ending a four-match losing streak - all to top-10 ranked teams.

To start the final day of the Stanford Invitational, the Spartans (7-6) lost to host and #1-ranked Stanford, 16-4. Adriana Vogt with her tournament best three goals and Curran with one accounted for San Jose State's scoring.

"Stanford (7-0) is incredibly good. They've got so many weapons that they have a national team player coming in off the bench," Tully said.

Though the Spartans were just 1-3 at the Stanford Invitational, the San Jose State coach remains encouraged.

"(After Hawaii) We emphasized getting off to good starts and we did a decent job of that. We need to stay more consistent on defense. We do a good job, but then have a defensive breakdown that hurts us," reflected the Spartans coach.

Tully and the San Jose State team have nearly two weeks to prepare for their next match - a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation encounter with #3-California, Saturday, February 19, at The Aquatics Center on the San Jose State campus. The match starts at noon and is the second meeting between these teams in 2011. At the Stanford Invitational, Cal pulled away from an 8-8 third-quarter tie for a 14-10 victory.
