#9-Spartans Lose To #3-Cal & #8-Arizona State

Stanford, Calif.----- San Jose State got off to good starts in its matches against #3-Cal and #8-Arizona State before losing to both teams in first-day action at the Stanford Invitational women's water polo tournament.

            The #9-ranked Spartans (6-5) lost to #3-Cal (8-0), 14-10, and to #8-Arizona State (1-1), 12-9.

"As bad as it is to lose, we played well. Against Cal, we played a lot better defense and didn't turn it over as much," said San Jose State coach Lou Tully, whose team was tied with Cal, 8-8, late in the third quarter.

The Spartans' coach dipped into his reserves throughout the two contests, was pleased with their overall contributions and looks to use them more as the season progresses.

Freshman Timi Molnar and junior Dani Curran were San Jose State's top scorers for the day. Four of Molnar's five scores came in the Cal match. Curran scored five times against Arizona State and once against Cal. The Sun Devils scored five straight goals, including four in the second quarter to pull away for the win.

Neither Molnar nor Adriana Vogt were around to help the San Jose State cause in the second half. Both Spartans were ejected separately in the second quarter.

Meagan Minson made five saves in the Cal match and stopped 10 Arizona State shots.

The Spartans open second day action on February 6 against #1-ranked and host Stanford at 8:00 a.m. and play a second match either for fifth or seventh place later in the day.
