Stanford, Calif.-----For the second day in a row, San Jose State University split a pair of matches to finish in fourth place at the Stanford Invitational women's water polo tournament.
The #8-nationally-ranked Spartans (6-3) defeated #16-ranked Hartwick (3-2), 12-4, to advance to the third-place match against #4-ranked California. Despite a 12-6 loss to Cal, San Jose State had its highest finish in a Stanford Invitational, which traditionally has at least four top-10 ranked teams in the eight-team field.
"Our players did a good job, but we're better than what we shwoed. We had a very tough time with Stanford and Cal," said San Jose State head coach Lou Tully.
Freshman Rae Lekness led the attack for the Spartans in the Hartwick win with three goals. Rachel Henry, Timi Molnar and Anna Natalizio each scored twice as San Jose State led the entire match.
Spartan goalkeeper Maddie Reardon was credited with nine saves in the victory.
In the third place match, Molnar recorded her fifth multi-goal effort in the last six contests with a team-high three goals. Henry duplicated her two goals in the third-place match, but that was not enough against a Cal team that expanded a 6-3 halftime advantage to 11-5 after three quarters.
"We have three weeks before the UC Irvine Tournament (Feb. 23 & 24) which is our next real competiiton and we found some things we need to work on," added the Spartans' coach.
San Jose State returns to action, Friday, February 8, hosting a Canadian touring team at The Aquatic Center at 1:00 p.m. in an exhibition match. Originally, the Spartans were to host Cal Baptist.
