#10 Women's Water Polo Sixth At Stanford Invitational

Stanford, Calif. - The No. 10 San Jose State Spartans (2-4) lost the final two games of the Stanford Tournament to No. 1 USC (4-1) and No. 5 Hawai’i (3-3) on Sunday, February 4.

After upsetting No. 7 Arizona State the day before, the Spartans tried to keep their momentum in hopes of upsetting the No. 1 USC Trojans. The Spartans started out strong, finishing the first quarter tied 2-2. The Spartans stayed competitive with the top team in the nation, finishing the first half down 5-4. In the second half, USC came out with determination, outscoring the Spartans 5-2, resulting in a 10-6 final score in favor of the Trojans.

San Jose State had strong performances by Tanya Torres, Juliet Moss and Bridget McKee. Torres led the Spartans with two goals, the second two-goal outing of her career. Moss scored her ninth goal of the season, second on the team, while the freshman McKee scored her fifth goal of the season.

In the second game, the Spartans took on No. 5 Hawai’i for fifth place in the Stanford Tournament. The Spartans played Hawai’i three days earlier, so both teams knew that the game would be close.

Hawai’i jumped out to an early 9-3 halftime lead, but the Spartans refocused and outscored Hawai’i 4-2 in the third quarter. The Spartans kept playing strong in the fourth quarter, outscoring Hawai’i 3-2, but in the end, San Jose State could not overcome the six-goal deficit, losing 13-10.

Beth Harberts continued her outstanding play in the Stanford Tournament, scoring two more goals Sunday. Harberts' weekend total was nine goals in two days, giving her 12 goals in 2007 to lead the Spartans.

Geraldine Hazlett and Brianna Lindsey both scored twice for the Spartans. It was Lindsey’s first career two-goal game. Deanna Lowry and Alexis Higlett both scored their fifth goals of the season, while Sara Natalizio and Tanya Torres each added a goal.

The Spartans' next game will be against No. 4 California on Saturday, February 10, at the San Jose State Aquatics Center. The match is slated for a 12:00 p.m. start.
