Women’s Water Polo Faces Tough Test At Stanford Invitational

San Jose State continues its stern early-season schedule with at least two more top-10 nationally opponents in the Stanford Invitational women’s water polo tournament, Saturday and Sunday, February 4 and 5.

The #16-ranked Spartans (2-4) open the four-match tournament against #4-California (5-0) in a 12:15 p.m. contest. The Golden Bears defeated San Jose State, 12-3, in a LouStrong Invitational encounter the opening week of the season. The match with Cal will be the fourth one against a top-five ranked opponent in the team’s first seven matches.

Women's Water Polo Picks Up 1st Win Of 2017 - 10-9 Over #17-UC Davis
Seven San Jose State players scored and Katelynn Thompson made eight saves in the Spartans' 10-9 win over UC Davis to conclude the third annual LouStrong Invitational named in memory of former head coach Lou Tully (1943-2013).

San Jose State closes out first-day action against #18-UC Davis (1-5) at 5:45 p.m. The Spartans picked up their first win of the season against the Aggies with a 10-9 decision in the LouStrong Invitational.

#7-Michigan (3-2) is San Jose State’s first opponent on February 5. The match begins at 9:40 a.m. The Spartans close out the tournament in the afternoon against either #20-Loyola Marymount, #8-Hawaii, #6-UC Irvine or host #1-Stanford.

Sophomore Carla Toha Vilanova goes into the Stanford Invitational as San Jose State’s leading scorer with nine goals. She is tied for 19th in goal scoring among Mountain Pacific Sports Federation players.
