Stanford, Calif.-----Anna Natalizio scored the a fourth-quarter, game-winning goal giving San Jose State University a 7-6 win highlighting the Spartans' first-day play at the Stanford Invitational women's water polo tournament.
San Jose State (5-2), ranked eighth nationally, lost its second match to host and #1-Stanford (6-0), 15-4.
Natalizio scored the first and final goals of the match in the win against #12-UC Davis (1-1) as the Spartans extended their winning streak to three in their opening match of the Invitational. San Jose State's Timi Molnar led all players with three goals.
Spartan goalkeeper Maddie Reardon made eight saves in the victory.
"It was a tough game and we expected it to be a tough game. UC Davis is very physical. We were always ahead, but we could never really break away," said San Jose State head coach Lou Tully, who added the Spartans were just 2-of-11 on their power play. "But we won the game. The women played well and did a good job."
In the nightcap, Stanford jumped out to a 5-1 first-quarter lead and were never threatened the rest of the way. U.S. Olympian Melissa Seidemann and Anna Yelizarova each scored five times for the Cardinal, which is averaging 15.4 goals per match this season.
"There's just a huge difference in the two teams and our players need to experience that, because we will see them again in conference. We'll play them (Stanford) at least one more time for sure. We have things to work on and games like this bring it out," Tully said.
Alisa Argend was San Jose State's leading scorer with a pair of goals. Molnar added one as the only Spartan to score in both first-day matches.
San Jose State opens play on February 3 against #16-Hartwick in an Avery Aquatic Center contest beginning at 8:00 a.m. (PST).
