Stanford, Calif. - The 10th-ranked San Jose State University women’s water polo team fell to No. 3 Stanford University (2-0), 15-8, on Saturday, February 3, in the opening game of the 2007 Stanford Invitational. San Jose State (1-2) was led by Beth Harberts’ three-goal performance.
The Spartans started the game strong, scoring two first-quarter goals to end the first five minutes down by just one at 3-2. After the encouraging first quarter, San Jose State struggled in the second, giving up five unanswered goals and going into halftime trailing, 8-2. Although down six goals, the Spartans came out motivated at the start of the second half, scoring two third-quarter goals and an impressive four fourth-quarter goals. In the end, however, San Jose State was unable to overcome the halftime deficit, losing 15-8.
The Spartan women continue to show improvement from a year ago, scoring six second-half goals on Saturday. San Jose State's eight goals matched its total against the Cardinal from 2006, when the Spartans were out-scored by Stanford, 22-8, in two meetings.
Although the Spartans' game effort did not result in an upset of the third-ranked team in the nation, a number of SJSU players continued their hot starts to the season. Harberts' three goals give the co-captain a team-leadinig six now on the season.
With Deanna Lowry’s goal on Saturday, she claimed sole possession of 14th place on the school's career goals list with a total of 43, passing Erin Kelly.
Bridget McKee kept up her torrid start with another goal. The freshman from Newbury Park, Calif., has scored in all three games this season for a total of five goals.
