Berkeley, Calif.------The San Jose State University women's water polo team improved its record to 7-0 for the 2010 season winning both its matches on the final day of the 2010 Nor Cal Cup hosted by the University of California.
The Spartans, ranked eighth nationally in the current coaches' poll, topped #14-UC Davis, 6-3, and handled Sonoma State easily, 17-3. In first-day action, San Jose State topped #19-Santa Clara, 12-6, and Cal State Monterey Bay, 10-1.
San Jose State gave up just 13 goals in its four games - the fewest allowed by any of the 10 teams in the tournament. The Spartans, Stanford and Cal each went undefeated in the tournament prior to Hawaii playing its final two contests late Sunday, January 31.
"We're doing a better job on defense. We're trying to get really good at what we do. We want to take away the ball-side drives and help back at the 2-meter line," said San Jose State coach Lou Tully, who wanted to see defensive improvement from his team. "We need to make sure we're doing that (defending at 2-meters) well, because our conference has a lot of good 2-meter players.
Anna Natalizio, Adriana Vogt, Kathryn Hannum and Ally Waasted scored in both victories on the final day of Nor Cal Cup action. Natalizio and Vogt were two of the three Spartans to score three times each in the Sonoma State win. Bridget McKee also tallied three times against Sonoma State.
Janessa Schmidbauer was the only player to score more than once with her two goals in the UC Davis triumph.
The Spartans will get their first real test of the 2010 the weekend of February 6 & 7 at the Stanford Invitational. San Jose State will face Michigan, USC and Stanford, all ranked in the top-10.
"I'm happy everyone is playing well right now. Our competition is going to take a large step forward next weekend," Tully added.
