Water Polo Goes 3-1 At Nor-Cal Open

Santa Clara, Calif.------San Jose State defeated Sonoma State, 14-9, but lost to #9-ranked UC Davis in the final day’s action at the Nor-Cal Open held at Santa Clara University.

The Spartans (5-2), ranked tenth nationally, led UC Davis (2-2), 7-6 after three quarters, but were outscored 4-2 in the final quarter. Dani Curran was the leading goal scorer for San Jose State against the Aggies with three goals. Tanya Torres, who scored nine goals in the weekend’s four games, added a pair.

“The team is disappointed we didn’t beat Davis. It was a team we needed to beat and we didn’t get it done. We were tentative, our passing wasn’t sharp and we turned the ball over way too often,” said San Jose State head coach Lou Tully. “We made a good run in the third quarter, but didn’t keep it up.”

The Spartans concluded their four matches in the weekend tournament dispatching Sonoma State. San Jose State jumped out quickly to a 5-1 first-quarter advantage and were not seriously challenged the rest of the way.  Juliet Moss, who scored 12 times during the weekend, had her second five-goal game of the tournament. Bridget McKee found the net three times for the Spartans, too.

Lauren Lewis, with one save, and Meagan Minson, with six, combined to stop seven Seawolves’ shots on goal.

“This (tournament) was a good opportunity to see all our players play. That was one of our objectives for the weekend and our players had a chance to show what they can do in competition,” added the Spartans’ coach.

San Jose State opens Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play, Wednesday, February 4, hosting #4-ranked Hawaii at the Aquatic Center. Game time is 4:00 p.m. (PST).
