Water Polo Sweeps Spartan Invitational

San Jose, Calif.-----San Jose State completed a four-match sweep in the Spartan Invitational women's water polo tournament with wins over Cal State Monterey Bay and Pacific in second-day action.

The Spartans (6-2), ninth-ranked in the national coaches' poll, topped Cal State Monterey Bay, 14-4, and defeated Pacific, 10-5.

"It was a good tournament for us. We got a chance to play everybody. We had some good competition here. Pacific was a team I was concerned about. They were a little better than I thought they would be," said San Jose State coach Lou Tully. "From our standpoint, it's fun to win.

Eight San Jose State players scored in the Cal State Monterey Bay match. Allie Stewart was one of five multi-goal scorers with a team-high three tallies. Dani Curran, Megan Lane, Kimber Methvin and Ally Waasted each scored twice.

Lauren Lewis made her first start of the season and was credited with seven saves. Freshman Maddie Reardon played in her first match as a Spartan and made two second-half saves.

Timi Molnar and Adriana Vogt combined for seven goals in the Pacific win. Molnar, a freshman from Budapest, Hungary, scored four times and Vogt found the cage on three occasions.

Meagan Minson, the Spartans' number-one goalkeeper, made 14 saves.

"This tournament showed how much we've been working in practice on concentrating on our defense. Our defense kind of pushed our offense and we were able to keep our momentum going," said Minson, who made 36 saves in 10 quarters of tournament action.
