#8-Water Polo Takes Two At Nor Cal Cup

Berkeley, Calif.-----San Jose State University, ranked eighth nationally, remained unbeaten in 2010 with wins over #19-ranked Santa Clara, 12-6, and Cal State Monterey Bay, 10-1, on the first day of the Nor Cal Cup.

"I thought we did a better job on defense. We didn't get caught being behind on our opponent's drives to the goal," said San Jose State coach Lou Tully, whose team has not given up more than six goals in a match this season. "Our defense is improving. It's an incfremental thing. Even though we have a lot of returning players, our team is becoming more comfortable working with each other."

Kelly Stewart and Kathryn Hannum scored their first goals of the season and combined for five scores in the Spartans' (5-0) of the two-day tournament.

Stewart scored three times and matched her single-match career best in her one-plus seasons as a Spartan. In last year's win over #4-Hawaii at The Aquatics Center, Stewart keyed the San Jose State offense with three scores in the 10-8 overtime win.

Hannum, a senior, added a pair for the Spartans (4-0) for her first multiple-goal match at the major college level.

Bridget McKee notched her fourth multi-goal effort of the season with two scores. Katie Buzzetta, Adriana Vogt, Anna Natalizio, Kimber Methvin and Janessa Schmidbauer each scored once.

Meagan Minson played the entire way in goal and was credited with five saves against Santa Clara (0-2).

Natalizio, Schmidbauer and Ally Wassted each scored twice in San Jose State's 10-1 win over Cal State Monterey Bay. Hannum added her third goal of the season in the victory. McKee, Megan Lane and Vogt also found the net for the Spartans.

Minson and Lauren Lewis each made four saves in the Cal State Monterey Bay win.

San Jose State concludes its tournament competition on Sunday, January 31 with matches against #14-UC Davis and Sonoma State.
