San Jose, Calif.-----Allie Stewart, with four goals in the opener, and Timi Molnar, with five in the second match, powered San Jose State to wins over Santa Clara and #16-UC Davis in first-day action of the Spartan Invitational women's water polo tournament.
The Spartans (4-2), ninth-ranked nationally, opened the tournament with a 10-5 win over Santa Clara and dispatched UC Davis, 13-9.
Stewart, Molnar and Dani Curran each finished with six goals in the two San Jose State matches. Curran scored three times in each match.
San Jose State goalkeeper Meagan Minson was came up with six saves in just two quarters of action in the Santa Clara win. Minson had 10 of her 16 saves in the UC Davis win in the final quarter.
"In both games, we got off to a pretty good start and got to play some more players in the Santa Clara game. The UC Davis game was a little tighter, which we figured it would be," said San Jose State head coach Lou Tully.
"Minson is really a good goalie. What's hard to explain to people is we let too many goals get scored on us as a team. It's not her; it's us. When we play better defense, she gets better numbers, because she does an incredible job. She's one of the best in the country," Tully said about his number-one goalkeeper.
#3-ranked Cal also won both its matches in first-day play over Cal State Monterey Bay, 18-1, and Pacific, 12-6.
The tournament concludes January 30 with all six teams playing two matches each. San Jose State faces Cal State Monterey Bay at 8:30 a.m. and Pacific, at 11:30 a.m.
