The Spartans, ranked eighth in the current national coaches' poll, take on #19-Santa Clara and Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday, January 30. The following day, January 31, San Jose State battles #14-UC Davis and Sonoma State.
Lou Tully's squad had its way offensively scoring 36 goals in its three matches. Though the Spartans allowed just 15 goals, the San Jose State coach still wants a better defensive effort from his team.
"We want to get our defense down so we're more aware of where people are. Sometimes, we get focused on one player and forget it's a team situation. We need to do a better job with that," says Tully who was pleased with the goalkeeping play of starter Meagan Minson and reserve Lauren Lewis.
"I'd like to see us put away our shots a little more. Our shooting percentages really aren't where they should be. That will be a point of emphasis. And, when we are a player down, focusing on the 5-on-6 defense in the early season. We need to be a little stronger with that."
Bridget McKee is the Spartans' leading scorer with nine goals. Dani Curran, with six, and Adriana Vogt, five, round out the top three scorers after the first tournament of the season.
"The offense is a work in progress. We changed things up some, because we have different personnel (from last year). We did a relatively good job with that. I was pleased, because I wasn't sure what to expect," the San Jose State coach says about the offensive end of the team.
Besides host Cal, ranked fourth nationally, Cal State East Bay, #3-Hawaii, Pacific, Sonoma State, #1-Stanford, UC Davis, Santa Clara, and UC Santa Barbara are in the 10-team tournament.
