Water Polo Improves To 4-0 On Season

Ann Arbor, Michigan  The seventh-ranked San Jose State Spartans women’s water polo team picked up wins over Colorado State and #18 Michigan to finish a perfect 4-0 during the two-day Michigan Kickoff Invitational.

After knocking off UCSD and Indiana on the first day of the weekend event, the Spartans opened Sunday with a 16-5 victory over Colorado State. In all, 10 Spartans scored in the win paced by sophomore Bridget McKee’s career-best tying four goal outing. Senior Beth Harberts added three.

In the final match of the weekend San Jose State faced tournament host and #18 ranked Michigan. A big save from senior goalie Kendra Adama and a last minute goal from freshman Adrianna Vogt provided the difference has the Spartans improved to 4-0 on the year with a 9-8 victory.

Adama recorded 10 saves on the day, but her biggest was stopping a 5-meter penalty shot early in the third-quarter.

“That was huge for us. Five-meter shots are tough, really tough. Often people miss them, but Kendra had a big stop when we needed it,” said head coach Lou Tully. “She played really well for us the entire weekend.”

With the scored tied at 8-8 and time running out, Vogt put the final ball into the net and San Jose’s defense clamped down on the Wolverines to end it.

“Adrianna has a great shot and that was a big one, obviously,” added Tully. “There are times in the game when she tries to do too much, but she more than makes up for it with what she does well.”

Vogt and Juliet Moss paced the Spartan scoring efforts with two goals.
