Women's Water Polo Readies For Nor-Cal Open

    The San Jose State University women’s water polo team competes in its second in-season tournament in as many weekends as the Spartans head to the Nor-Cal Open on the Santa Clara University campus. Tournament dates are Saturday and Sunday, January 31 and February 1 at the Sullivan Aquatic Center.

    The Spartans (2-1), ranked #7-nationally,  take on 20th-ranked Santa Clara (1-0) at 8:00 a.m. and Cal State Monterey Bay (0-0) at 1:00 p.m. on January 31. San Jose State battles UC Davis (0-0) at 10:30 a.m. and concludes the weekend’s action with Sonoma State (0-0) at 2:15 p.m. on February 1.

    San Jose State opened its season winning two of three at the University of Michigan’s Kick-Off in Ann Arbor, Mich. The #7-ranked Spartans knocked off #14-Cal State Northridge and Bucknell before host Michigan, #10-nationally, edged San Jose State, 8-6.

    “This (tournament) will give us a chance to get another good look at the team. We have a lot of freshmen and other who need to play and play well,” said head coach Lou Tully, who took eight freshmen to Michigan. “Our passing and shooting need work and we need to do a better job of protecting the ball.”

    Freshman Dani Curran is the leading scorer for the Spartans with nine goals. Adriana Vogt and Bridget McKee are next with five each.
