Water Polo Opens Season With Pair Of Wins

Ann Arbor, Michigan San Jose State picked up a pair of victories on the first day of the University of Michigan Kick-Off Water Polo Invitational Saturday. The Spartans move to 2-0 on the season with wins over UC San Diego (9-5) and Indiana (13-8).

“Overall I’m very pleased with our effort today. I thought we played much better in the second game than the first,” said head coach Lou Tully. “We had too many kick-outs (ejections), had our hands down on defense and were out of position in the first game. But it was the first game and we made strides in the second and we were able to play a lot of people.”

In the opening match against the 9th ranked Tritons of UCSD, Juliet Moss paced the Spartan attack with five goals. Junior Tanya Torres added a pair of scores while seniors Geraldine Hazlett and Beth Harberts each added solo goals. Kendra Adama had 10 saves in goal.

“Juliet was really outstanding in the first game. They (UCSD) had trouble with her in the 2-meter spot,” said head coach Lou Tully. “Not only did she score the five goals, but she also drew three ejections.”

In the second match against Indiana, Torres and Hazlett paced the scoring attack with four goals each, Bridget McKee and Moss had two each and freshman Adrianna Vogt added her first career goal. Adama added six saves while Kelly Kennison stopped three.

“Adrianna really did some good things and she is getting a lot of pool time,” Tully said. “We will continue to mix up our starters and get everyone playing time the rest of the tournament.”

San Jose State concludes the tournament Sunday, January 27 against Colorado State and host Michigan.
