Ann Arbor, Mich.-----Adriana Vogt scored twice and four other San Jose State University players scored once, but the University of Michigan held on for an 8-6 victory in the Michigan Kick-Off women’s water polo tournament.
Heading into the second half, the teams were tied, 2-2 after Vogt’s first goal of the match, but the #10-ranked Wolverines out-scored the #7-ranked Spartans, 4-1, in the third quarter. San Jose State (2-1) came back with the first two scores of the fourth period to close to 6-5 on Vogt’s second tally and later trailed, 7-6, before Michigan (2-1) closed out the scoring.
Kathryn Hannum, Juliet Moss, Bridget McKee and Tanya Torres joined Vogt in the scoring column with a goal apiece.
“Overall, we played really well, but we missed a lot of good opportunities. In the third quarter, we let down defensively, but came back,” said associate head coach Johnny Bega about the Spartans who finished 2-1 in the season-opening tournament.
Meagan Minson started in goal for San Jose State and was credited with four saves. Kelly Kennison was the second half goalkeeper and made two saves.
Though no tournament champion was crowned, the Spartans finished fourth in the nine-team tournament that featured six top-20 teams.
The Spartans return to action, Saturday, January 31, at the two-day Nor-Cal Open on the Santa Clara University campus. San Jose State faces Santa Clara and Cal State Monterey Bay the first day of the tournament and UC Davis and Sonoma State on Sunday, February 1.
