Water Polo 12th In Weekly Coaches Poll; Heads To UC Santa Barbara Invite

With three convincing wins in the Bruin Invitational, San Jose State University is 12th in the current Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) weekly poll.

The Spartans (4-1) won their three matches by an average of 9.3 goals per outing. The one loss was a 12-7 decision to Loyola Marymount, which moved ahead of San Jose State to #11.

Interim head coach Johnny Begais taking San Jose State to the three-day UC Santa Barbara Invitational, Friday, January 24, and Saturday, January 25 with the opportunity to play two top-20 teams. The Spartans open play taking host and #17 UC Santa Barbara (0-0) at 1:40 p.m. and Azusa Pacific (0-0) at 5:10 p.m. San Jose State concludes its two days of action January 25 with Fresno Pacific (0-0) at 11:20 a.m. and #6-UC Irvine (0-0).

The Spartans will be one of the highest scoring teams at the UC Santa Barbara Invitational. San Jose State is averaging more than 14 goals a match after two weekends of play. Freshman Clara Espar, who scored at least three times in each match, already has 19 goals. Sophomore Rae Lekness, named to the 2013 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation All-Newcomer team, is next with 15. Two-time All-American Timi Molnar moved into eighth place on the career scoring list with 143 at the Bruin Invitational is third with 12.
