Woodland, Calif.----- After tying a San Jose State University single-match freshman scoring record with six goals in a 9-6 win over #11-Michigan, Rae Lekness was named the KAP 7 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's water polo Newcomer of the Week.
Lekness, from Calgary, Alberta, was a key figure in the #9-Spartans going 3-1 in the season-opening Michigan Kick-Off at the Canham Natatorium on the Michigan campus. The one-time member of the Canadian National 18-and-under team scored in every San Jose State match and finished with 11 goals.
UCLA's Rachel Fattal was the only other player nominated for MPSF Newcomer of the Week honors.
San Jose State has its home opener, Saturday, January 26, hosting Michigan (1-3) in a 12:00 p.m. non-conference rematch at The Aquatics Center. There is no admission charge and paid parking is available in the university's 7th Street garage, a one-block walk to The Aquatics Center.
