San Jose, Calif.-----Timi Molnar scored seven times leading #-5 ranked San Jose State to a pair of victories in first day action of the Spartan Invitational women's water polo tournament at San Jose State.
The sophomore from Budapest, Hungary and the 2011 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Freshman of the Year scored four times in the season opener as San Jose State (2-0) easily defeated Pacific, 11-3. A returning honorable mention All-American, Molnar and teammate Dani Curran each scored three times in a 12-8 triumph over UC Santa Barbara (1-2).
Curran, a three-time 50-plus goal scorer, got off to a strong start offensively with five goals.
"I was very pleased with our counter-attack and our defense. Those are two areas of emphasis we want to have," said San Jose State head coach Lou Tully. "Overall, it was a good day. I was very pleased with our effort. (For the most part), we played hard."
One area that caught Tully's eye was UC Santa Barbara's second-half rally. The Spartans took a 10-2 lead into the third quarter and still was ahead 11-5 with a quarter remaining.
"Our first half was great, but we need four quarters out of everybody," he said.
San Jose State hosts the Fraser Valley Club of Surrey, B.C., in an exhibition and UC Davis in final-day action of the Spartan Invitational on January 22.
