#7-Spartans Open Season With Split

Ann Arbor, Mich.-----Turnovers proved to be one of the keys for San Jose State in its season-opening play at the Michigan Kick-Off women's water polo tournament.

The #7-ranked Spartans committed just two in an 8-2 win over Colorado State in the Spartans' opening match of the 2011 season and 21 in a 9-7 loss to host Michigan, ranked eighth nationally in the nightcap.

"We played well (against Colorado State). Against Michigan, we turned it over and they got on a roll with their counter attacks," said San Jose State coach Lou Tully. "We created our own problems by not protecting the ball and not taking care of the ball."

The San Jose State coach was pleased with the Spartans' power play in both matches. Overall, San Jose State was 8-of-17 in its power plays to open the season.

Adriana Vogt was the top offensive threat scoring six goals, three in each match. The senior co-captain and returning All-American moved into third place on the career scoring list with 165 goals.

Dani Curran, who also earned All-American honors last season, and Allie Stewart each scored three times on opening day in the Canham Natatorium. Freshman Timi Molnar scored once in each match in her college debut.

Meagan Minson played both matches in goal for the Spartans. She was credited with 11 saves in the Colorado State win and nine against Michigan.

To conclude its play in the Michigan Kick-Off, San Jose State faces #14-Hartwick and #6-Loyola Marymount.
