Clara Espar Named MPSF Women's Water Polo Newcomer of the Week

Interim head coach Johnny Bega was instrumental in recruiting Clara Espar to enroll at San Jose State.

Woodland, Calif.----- After scoring 16 goals in four tournament games over two days, San Jose State University freshman Clara Esparis the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's water polo Newcomer of the Week for the week ending January 19.

Espar, from Barcelona, Spain, led the eighth-ranked Spartans in scoring as San Jose State (4-1) won three out of four matches at the Bruin Invitational hosted by UCLA. The Spartans posted victories over Cal Baptist, Cal State Bakersfield and Concordia.

Her scoring spree is the most goals scored by a San Jose State in a four-game tournament since Juliet Moss, third on the university's career scoring list with 206 goals, scored 17 times in the 2009 Arizona State Invitational.

Espar leads the Spartans in scoring with 19 goals heading into the January 24 & 25 UC Santa Barbara Invitational. San Jose State faces host UC Santa Barbara and Azusa Pacific in first-day action and Fresno Pacific and #6-ranked UC Irvine to wrap up the tournament and its first month of the season.
