Women's Water Polo Opens Season At Michigan Kick-Off

The San Jose State University women’s water polo team, ranked seventh nationally in one preseason poll, opens its 2009 season facing two top-20 teams at the University of Michigan Kick-Off. The 16-team tournament takes place, Saturday and Sunday, January 24 & 25, at the Canham Natatorium on the Michigan campus.

The Spartans face #14-Cal State Northridge in the season opener and Bucknell University on January 24. San Jose State, undefeated in the 2008 Michigan Kick-Off, take on #10-Michigan on January 25.

Eight of the nation’s top-20 teams are competing in the two-day event that features four Mountain Pacific Sports Federation schools all ranked in the top-10 including San Jose State and two teams from the Big Ten Conference.

The Spartans return six letterwinners from the 2008 squad that finished seventh in the final coaches’ national poll. All-America Juliet Moss, now in her senior season, was a 60-goal scorer in 2008. San Jose State also has proven scoring threats in Bridget McKee and Adriana Vogt, a pair of 40-plus goal scorers last season, and Tanya Torres, who scored 26 goals in 16 games.

Ten newcomers hope to make significant contributions throughout the season. Several of them, including Dani Curran, received All-American recognition either in high school or club competition last year.
