Spartans Win 3-Of-4 For 9th Place At UC Irvine Invitational

Irvine, Calif.----- San Jose State University completed a two-match sweep over UC Davis and Loyola Marymount to finish in ninth place out of 16 teams at the UC Irvine Invitational women's water polo tournament.

The #8-ranked Spartans (12-4) topped UC Davis (8-8), 10-8, in their morning match and concluded the day with a 16-13 victory over #20-ranked Loyola Marymount. San Jose State finished the tournament with three consecutive wins after losing to #9-Cal State Northridge in its UC Irvine opener.

Bianca Seyfert matched her single-game career high of five goals and Rae Lekness added five more as San Jose State racked up its third highest single-match goal total this season in the Loyola Marymount win.

With three scores, team captain Timi Molnar was the Spartans' third multi-goal scorer in San José State's first win in five tries over Loyola Marymount dating back to 2010. The graduate student from Budapest, Hungary raised her career-scoring total to 202 to become the fourth player in school history to score at least 200 goals.

Katelynn Thompson was credited with four saves in goal for San Jose State in each of the team's two victories.

The Spartans advanced to the ninth place match with a 10-8 win over #13-UC Davis. San Jose State trailed, 5-4 at halftime, and was even with the Aggies, 7-7, going into the final quarter.

For the second time in two meetings this season, Espar Llaquet scored five times in a win over UC Davis. Molnar, Lekness and Seyfert each scored once in the victory.

San José State opens Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play, Sunday, March 1, hosting UCLA at The Aquatics Center in a 1:00 p.m. contest.
