Las Vegas, Nev.-San Jose State middle blockers Alex Akana and Kylie Miraldi have been selected to the second team All-Western Athletic Conference Volleyball Team, as selected by the team's head coaches and announced tonight at the WAC Tournament Banquet.
Akana and Miraldi are the Spartan starters at middle blockers. They helped San Jose State to its best blocking numbers since the 2007 season. The Spartans have 196.5 total blocks, led by Akana with 85, nine solo and 76 assists. Miraldi follows closely with 76, 10 solo and 66 assists.
This week's WAC Player of the Week, Akana, a junior from Kailua, Hawaii, leads the team in hitting with a.313 percentage. She has 197 kills, 2.07 per set, on 435 attempts and just 61 errors. Akana recorded a career-high 17 kills last Tuesday in a five-set victory over Texas Tech. Her final kill of the night set her career high and was the gamewinner for the Spartans.
Miraldi, a senior from Grass Valley, Calif., is second on the team in hitting at .302. She has 199 kills, 2.07 ps, on 493 attempts and just 50 errors. Earlier this season, Miraldi tied the San Jose State match record for block assists and total blocks with 14 block assists and total blocks against UC Riverside. She was named the Most Valuable Player of the Hilton Stockton Invitational.
San Jose State opens play at the 2011 WAC Volleyball Tournament Monday afternoon against the third-seed New Mexico State. First serve is set for 5 p.m., inside the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. Live video streaming is available for a fee at WAC.tv.
