HonoluluKelly Crow led the San Jose State volleyball team with 10 kills, but the Spartans fell to top-seed New Mexico State, 25-18, 25-22, 25-18, in a semifinal match at the 2008 Western Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament presented by the Harris Agency.
Crow recorded her 10 kills on 36 attempts and added six digs. Colleen Burke hit a team-best .389 with eight kills on 18 attempts and just one hitting error. Kylie Miraldi led the team with three blocks, on solo and two assists. She added three kills, three assists and two digs. Nia Freeman and Brianna Amian each recorded five kills in the match.
Defensively, Kristal Tsukano led the Spartans with 13 digs. Courtney Zellmer came off the bench and added 11 digs.
At setter, Emily Burke started the match and collected eight assists, four digs and one kill in two sets played. Brittany Collet came off the bench and had 18 assists, one kill and one dig in three sets played.
The two teams played all three sets close. In the second set, the Aggies jumped out to a 6-0 lead, but the Spartans slowly chipped away at the lead. With Collet serving at 14-13, the Spartans took a 15-14 lead. The teams continued to trade the lead. San Jose State took a 20-18 lead on a Colleen Burke kill, but NMSU took the lead for good at 22-21 on a Kelli Goodan kill.
In the third set, New Mexico State jumped out to an early lead, 7-5. However, a kill by Amian and four consecutive points served by Thao Pham gave the Spartans a 10-7 lead. San Jose State maintained the lead until the Aggies took it back for good at 15-14 on an Amian hitting error.
San Jose State is now 13-17 on the season. The Spartans conclude the 2008 season with a non-conference match at San Francisco this Tuesday, November 25, at 7 p.m.
