Fresno, Calif.-Spartan middle blockers Kylie Miraldi and Sarah Griest combined for 14 kills, no hitting errors and six blocks Thursday night. But San Jose State hit just .172 as the Spartans lost at Fresno State, 25-19, 25-15, 25-23 in the team's final match of the 2010 season.
Griest led the Spartans with nine kills and hit .529 for the match with 17 attempts and no hitting errors. She also led the team with five block assists. Miraldi added five kills on 13 attempts for a .385 hitting percentage and contributed two blocks.
"Our middles played well tonight," said Spartan head coach Oscar Crespo. "Sarah had a great match for us offensively and defensively. Sarah did a nice job stepping into a starting role on short notice, just like she did in the beginning of the year for Kylie."
The flu was going through the Spartan team and starting middle blocker Alex Akana and starting libero Katie Turner were out for the match. Courtney Zellmer started her final match in a Spartan uniform at libero. She led the team with 14 digs and ends her career with 796 digs.
"Courtney did a nice job tonight at libero in her final match. She played nicely for us, and I am proud of her," said Crespo.
Others contributing Thursday night include Taylor Japhet with six kills and two blocks. Krista Miller came off the bench to record five kills on eight attempts, no hitting errors and two block assists. Caitlin Andrade had 27 assists, four digs and two block assists. Hanah Blume had four kills, eight digs and two block assists.
San Jose State finishes the season with an 8-22 overall record and a 3-13 Western Athletic Conference record.
