Boise, Idaho-Taylor Japhet and Kylie Miraldi each had nine kills, but San Jose State fell in four sets at Boise State, 23-25, 25-15, 25-18, 25-22 Monday night in a Western Athletic Conference match.
Miraldi hit .364 for the match with her nine kills on 22 attempts and just one hitting error. She added two blocks and a dig in the loss. Japhet also had five digs, one block and one ace.
Alex Akana led the Spartans in blocks with four and added eight kills as she hit .429 for the night with 14 attempts and just two errors. Meanwhile, Courtney Zellmer led the team with 18 kills and had two assists and a kill.
Other hitters contributing included Hanah Blume with eight kills, nine digs and two block assists. Brianna Amian added six kills, three block assists and three digs. Krista Miller came off the bench and had five kills while hitting .444 (5-1-9). Sarah McAtee added two kills and a dig.
Caitlin Andrade had 44 assists with eight digs and five kills. Katie Turner recorded 11 digs, two assists and two aces. Asia Casino added four digs and two assists.
The Spartans came out strong in the first set with the team winning 25-23. San Jose State jumped out to a 10-5 lead and grew the lead to 17-11 before a Bronco timeout. Boise State then chipped away at the lead and tied the set at 20-20. The teams went back and forth before a Miraldi kill gave the Spartans the lead for good.
"We stayed on top of Boise State in the first set," said San Jose State head coach Oscar Crespo. "But Boise State started to get the momentum and took it into the second set."
The Broncos dominated the next two sets, wining 25-15 and 25-18, before the two teams battled in the final set. Boise State won the fourth set 25-22, but there were seven tied scored and five lead changes. San Jose State again got out to a 9-4 lead, forcing a Boise State timeout. The score was tied at 22-22 before the Broncos scored the final three points of the match.
"Our middles did a nice job tonight. Unfortunately, we did not pass well enough in transition to run our offense through our middles so everything went to our outside hitters."
San Jose State finishes the 2010 season this Thursday night with a WAC match at Fresno State. The match begins at 7 p.m.
