Volleyball Plays #13 New Mexico State Tough at WAC Tournament

Las Cruces, N.M.Keri Anglin recorded one of her best hitting matches of San Jose State career and the Spartan volleyball team played tough with #13 New Mexico State in a semifinal match at the 2007 Western Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament.  However, the Aggies prevailed in the end with a 31-29, 31-29, 30-23, win Friday night at the Pan American Center.  

Anglin hit .583 in her final match in a Spartan uniform.  She led the team with 16 kills on 24 attempts and only two hitting errors.  She added two blocks, two digs and a service ace for San Jose State.

Others contributing for San Jose State included Niki Clement with nine kills and eight digs.  Colleen Burke added seven kills and four blocks (1-3), while Brianna Amian contributed six kills and four block assists.  Kelly Croiw had three kills and seven digs, while Emily Burke added 31 assists, four digs and a block.  Courtney Zellmer led the team in digs with 14, and Kristal Tsukano added 10 digs.  Nia Freeman came off the bench with two kills and two digs.

 

The Spartans started the match strong, jumping out to a 15-9 lead in game one which forced a New Mexico State timeout.  San Jose State maintained control until the game was tied at 25-25.  The two teams then battled back and forth.  The Aggies had game-point at 29-28, but Colleen Burke and Amian combined for a block to tie the game at 29-29.  However, consecutive points by NMSU gave them the 31-29 victory.

 

In game two, New Mexico State jumped out to the early 13-6 lead, but the Spartans continued to fight back and tied the match at 16-16.  The Spartans took a five-point lead at 21-16 and 23-18 on a Clement kill.  San Jose State led 26-21 on an Anglin kill before the Aggies again chipped away at the Spartan lead.  NMSU tied the game at 28-28 after Colleen Burke hit the ball long.  Burke however redeemed herself with a kill to give San Jose State the 29-28 lead.  But three consecutive Aggie points produced the 31-29 victory.

 

Senior Jennifer Senftleben finishes her San Jose State career as the fourth all-time kill person with 1,597 kills.  She was limited in her action the past three matches due to an injury.  Senftleben saw action in game three of tonight’s match and recorded her final Spartan kill.

 

San Jose State finishes the 2007 season with a 14-15 overall record under the direction of first-year head coach Oscar Crespo.  The Spartans will say goodbye to Anglin and Senftleben.
