Volleyball Signs Setter for 2012

San Jose-Michaela Leonard, a 5-9 setter from Placer High School, has signed a National Letter-of-Intent to play volleyball at San Jose State University beginning in the fall of 2012, as announced by Spartan head coach Oscar Crespo.

Leonard is the starting setter and outside hitter at Placer High School where her team won the 2009 and 2010 Pioneer Valley League Championship.  She was the 2010 Pioneer Valley League Most Valuable Player and a two-time first team all-league honoree. She plays for the Northern California Volleyball Club, and her team finished 19th at the 2011 Junior Nationals Open Division and 11th in the 2010 Junior Nationals

This season, her high school team finished second in the Pioneer Valley League with an 8-2 record.  Currently in the Sac-Joaquin Sectional Playoffs, Placer has advanced to the section semifinals Tuesday night against the second-seed Vista del Lago.  The Hillgals upset the third-seed Rosemont last Thursday as Leonard led the team with 10 kills.

Off the court, Leonard has over a 4.0 grade point average and is a three-time Scholar Athlete.  She also received an Academic Achievement in Math award in 2010.

"We are extremely excited to have Michaela join our program in 2012," said Crespo.  "She is a very competitive, athletic and experienced setter.  She will add depth and competitiveness at setter for us."
