San Jose, Calif.-Samantha O'Connell and Alex Akana each had 15 kills to lead the San Jose State volleyball team to a comeback win over Louisiana Tech, 17-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-12, Saturday night in a Western Athletic Conference match.
Akana hit a team-best .400 with her 15 kills on 30 attempts and just three errors. She also led the team with six blocks, one solo and five assists. O'Connell hit .316 for the match with her 15 kills on 38 attempts and just three errors. She added four block assists, eight digs and two service aces.
On Senior Night, Kylie Miraldi, Asia Casino and Brianna Amian all contributed to the win. Miraldi hit .381 with nine kills on 21 attempts and just one error. Casino added nine assists and two digs, while Amian had three kills, three digs and a service ace.
"We had a great team effort tonight," said Spartan head coach Oscar Crespo. "I am happy for our seniors that we were able to win for them on Senior Night. Louisiana Tech battled hard with us and played with a lot of character."
Louisiana Tech started the match strong, hitting .407 in the first set as they won 25-17. San Jose State hit just .206.
The second set was a reverse of the first as San Jose State outhit them .268-.150 to win 25-17.
The two teams battled in the third set with nine ties and seven lead changes. San Jose State won as Miraldi got a kill and a Lady Techster hitting error gave the Spartans a 25-23 win.
The Spartans dominated the fourth set, hitting .414 with 15 kills on 29 attempts and just three errors. Sarah Griest clinched the match with a service ace to win 25-12.
San Jose State hosts its final regular season match on Tuesday, November 15, with a non-conference contest against Texas Tech. First serve is set for 7 p.m., inside Spartan Gym, located on the corner of Fourth and San Carlos Streets.
