San Jose-San Jose State played a close match with New Mexico State, and 11 Spartans saw action in the match as the Spartans lost 25-23, 27-25, 25-16, Thursday night in a Western Athletic Conference match at Spartan Gym.
Despite not taking a lead in the first set, San Jose State kept fighting and tied the set at 23-23. New Mexico State then took the set with two consecutive points to win 25-23.
In set two, there were six lead changes and nine ties. The Spartans held match point at 24-23 on an Aggie service error but could not close out the set and fell 27-25.
"We played two really great sets and battled really hard," said Spartan head coach Oscar Crespo. "Now, we just need to close out sets, especially set two tonight when we had set point."
Hanah Blume led the Spartans with nine kills, and Caitlin Andrade recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 18 assists and 14 digs. Krista Miller led the team with three block assists and added five kills and seven digs.
Samantha O'Connell started at outside and had seven kills, four digs and two block assists. Alex Akana added five kills and two block assists, while Mary Alice O'Reilly recorded three kills and two blocks, one solo and one assist.
San Jose State finishes WAC play this Saturday against Louisiana Tech at 7 p.m. The Spartan seniors, Brianna Amian, Asia Casino and Kylie Miraldi, will be honored prior to the match.
