Las Cruces, N.M.-Three Spartans recorded double-digit kills, and San Jose State started strongly against New Mexico State Saturday night. However, the Spartans could not find their hitting after the first set and lost to the Aggies, 27-29, 25-19, 25-17, 25-20, in a Western Athletic Conference match at the Pan American Center.
Hanah Blume led the Spartans with 12 kills and had six digs and two block assists. Kylie Miraldi and Alex Akana each had 10 kills in the match. Miraldi hit .269 in the match and led the team with six block assists.
Others contributing Saturday night included Brianna Amian with seven kills, nine digs and four blocks. Taylor Japhet had five kills, while Sarah McAtee added three kills and five digs. Katie Turner led the team with 15 digs, while Caitlin Andrade had 41 assists, eight digs and three kills. Courtney Zellmer had seven digs, while Asia Casino added five digs.
San Jose State battled with the Aggies in the first set as there were 15 tied scored and seven lead changes. The Spartans took the final lead at 28-27 on an Aggie attack error and won the set as Miraldi and Blume combined on a block for a 29-27 set win. In the set win, San Jose hit .275 with 15 kills on 40 attempts and just four hitting errors.
The next three sets proved a different story for the Spartans. The team hit .079, .057 and .116 in the three losses. In those three sets, there were just five lead changes including none in the third set.
The Spartans return to Spartan Gym next Saturday, November 13, for the final home match of the season. The team hosts #4 Hawaii at 1 p.m. Zellmer and fellow senior Leilani Marple will be honored prior to the match.
