San JoseThree Spartans recorded double-doubles, and San Jose State hit .305 in the match in a 25-16, 25-14, 25-23 victory over Fresno State Thursday evening at Spartan Gym.
Three Spartans recorded double-doubles in the match. Kelly Crow had her seventh double-double of the season with a team-high 15 kills and 15 digs. Brianna Amian added her third double-double of the year with 12 kills and a career-best 19 digs. Amian also hit .423 for the match with her 12 kills on 26 attempts and only one error. Brittany Collet started at setter and had 37 assists and 11 digs for her second double-double of the season. She added four kills one seven attempts.
Other contributing included Colleen Burke who had 10 kills and hit a team-best .500 with 18 attempts and only one hitting error. Kylie Miraldi led the team in blocking with three, one solo and two assists, and added two kills. Kristal Tsukano recorded a team-best 20 digs and added five assists and two service aces. Nia Freeman had three kills, two digs, an assist and a block assist in two sets played. Sarah McAtee recorded a kill and block assist. Courtney Zellmer added seven digs and an assist.
“We were very competitive tonight and a cohesive team,” said San Jose State head coach Oscar Crespo. “Brittany did a great job setting for us. Our transitional offense was good and we blocked and dug better tonight which helped our offensive transition run smoother.”
The Spartans took an 8-7 lead in set one on an Amian kill and did not look back as the team won 25-16. San Jose State hit .295 in the set with 16 kills.
In the second set, Crow served six consecutive points at the beginning of the set to give the Spartans an 8-2 lead which they would not relinquish. Tsukano served six points near the end of the set as San Jose State won 25-14.
After the break, Amian served the first five points for San Jose State to jump out to a 5-0 lead in the third set. Fresno State fought back and tied the set at 10-10. The Spartans then took the lead again and led by as many as four at 22-18 and Collet ended the set with her fourth kill to give San Jose State the victory.
The Spartans improved to 10-13 overall and 5-6 in the WAC, while Fresno State fell to 5-15 and 2-9 in the WAC. San Jose State returns home Saturday night for a conference match against Idaho. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at Spartan Gym.
