San Jose-In her second start of the year at setter, Asia Casino recorded her first double-double in her Spartan career with 29 assists and 13 digs, but San Jose State could not maintain leads in the first two sets and lost to Utah State, 25-22, 26-24, 25-18, Thursday night at Spartan Gym.
Casino tied both of her career highs with the 29 assists and 13 digs. She added three kills, a service and a block assist in the match.
Hanah Blume led the Spartans with 12 kills and was one dig away from her sixth double-double of the season with nine digs. She also had an assist and a block assist in the match.
Others contributing for San Jose State included Taylor Japhet with eight kills and seven digs. Katie Turner led the team with 14 digs and three aces and added three assists. Kylie Miraldi hit .333 for the match with six kills on 15 attempts and just one error and added a solo block. Alex Akana added a team-best three block assists.
San Jose State jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the first set and maintained the lead until Utah State used a 13-7 run to take an 18-17 lead. The Aggies led 20-18, but the Spartans tied the match at 21-21 on a Utah State service error. However, the Spartans could not capitalize and Utah State won 25-22.
The second set featured 13 tied scores and three lead changes. The two teams battled throughout the set and San Jose State took a 24-20 lead on a block from Akana and Amian. However, an Aggie kill gave the momentum back to Utah State, and they then scored the next five points to win 26-24.
The Spartans finish out the month of October with a match against Nevada this Saturday night at 7 p.m., inside Spartan Gym.
