Reno, Nev.-Four Spartan hitters recorded .300 or better hitting percentages in leading the San Jose State volleyball team to a Western Athletic Conference win at Nevada, 25-19, 25-14, 25-17, Thursday night.
Alex Akana led the team with a .500 percentage as she had five kills on eight attempts and just one hitting error. Kylie Mirladi also had just one hitting error with a .455 percentage with six kills on 11 attempts. Krista Miller hit .455 with seven kills on 11 attempts and two errors, while Savanah Leaf also had just two hitting errors with a team-best 11 kills on 25 attempts.
For the match, San Jose State hit .350, the third-best hitting percentage in a match this season. The team also won the blocking battle, 8-6, and aces at 5-3.
Setter Caitlin Andrade continue to accumulate assists for her career with 30 tonight and now has 2,591 to maintain her fourth-place position on the San Jose State career assist list. She added six digs, two blocks and three kills in the win.
Akana led the Spartans in blocking with four, one solo and three assists, while Leaf and Miller led San Jose State with nine digs each.
Also contributing for San Jose State were Samantha O'Connell who had five kills, two digs and two blocks playing in a Spartan uniform for the first time in her hometown. Hanah Blume had two kills, seven digs and an ace, while Kiely Pieper had four kills and an ace. Mary Alice O'Reilly recorded a solo block and a block assist.
"This is a phenomenal group right now who are really believing in their teammates on the court," said Spartan coach Oscar Crespo. "Everyone had a great hitting night from our outsides, middles and right side. Serving was also a key component for us tonight as we served tough and had five aces. This was a great team effort."
San Jose State has now won three of its last four matches and enters Saturday night's match at Fresno State at 10-14 overall and 5-6 in the WAC. The match begins at 7 p.m. at the SaveMart Center.
