Volleyball Wins First Set, Falls To #23 Santa Clara

San JoseSan Jose State started strong against #23 Santa Clara, winning the first set, but the Bronco volleyball team rebounded in the next three sets to defeat the Spartans, 22-25, 25-13, 25-20, 25-22, in a non-conference match at Spartan Gym.

Kelly Crow led San Jose State with 15 kills and added seven digs. Colleen Burke added eight kills and two blocks. Kylie Miraldi led the team with five blocks and added seven kills, while Brianna Amian added seven kills and five digs. Nia Freeman added seven kills, four blocks and two digs from the right side.

Kristal Tsukano led the Spartans with 13 digs and added five assists, one kill and one service ace. Emily Burke had a solid match for the Spartans at setter with 31 assists, eight digs, five kills and two blocks. Courtney Zellmer added eight digs, five assists and a service ace. Brittany Collet came off the bench in the second set and had two assists and a dig. Thao Pham recorded a dig in two sets played.

The Spartans won the first set, 25-22. The two teams tied seven times, but San Jose State did not let Santa Clara take a lead. The Spartans led by as many as five points at 9-4. The two teams were tied at 19-19, but Emily Burke recorded a kill to extend the Spartan lead to 23-20, and Crow recorded a kill to give San Jose State the win. The Spartans hit .448 for the set with 16 kills on 29 attempts and only three hitting errors.

Santa Clara established the early lead in set two and never looked back in the 25-13 win. The Broncos hit .375 in the match, while the Spartans hit just .061.

In the third set, the Broncos took an early lead at 16-10, but San Jose State closed to within two points at 19-21 on a Miraldi kill. Santa Clara then pulled away for the 25-20 win.

San Jose State did not lead in the fourth set but did get within two points at 24-22 on a Freeman and Colleen Burke block of Kelley. But Santa Clara recorded the final point of the match for the 25-22 win.

Three Santa Clara players recorded double-figure digs, led by Krista Kelley with 18, Brittany Lowe at 15 and Anna Cmaylo with 11. Lowe recorded a double-double with 11 digs.

San Jose State is now 9-12 overall, while Santa Clara is 13-5. The Spartans travel to Hawaii for a Western Athletic Conference match with the Rainbow Wahine Friday evening at 7 p.m. HDT.
