Seattle, Wash.-Mary Alice O'Reilly and Krista Miller led the hitting attack as the San Jose State volleyball team swept Seattle U 3-0 (25-18, 26-24, 25-23) Thursday night in a Western Athletic Conference match in Seattle.
O'Reilly led the team in hitting at .545 with 13 kills on 22 attempts and just one error. She added seven digs and two block assists. Miller hit .414 with 13 kills on 29 attempts and just one error. She added eight digs and three blocks, one solo and two assists.
Three other Spartans had five or more kills - Hanah Blume with seven kills to go with a team-best 12 digs and three service aces; Alex Akana with six kills as she hit .364 and added three block assists; and Samantha O'Connell with five kills, eight digs and two block assists.
Michaela Leonard had 38 assists and five digs, while Kiely Pieper added nine digs and two service aces. Sarah Griest had a kill in the second set.
"It was very nice to get a road win, especially a sweep," said Spartan head coach Oscar Crespo. "We kept our composure throughout the match, especially when we were down three to four points in the second set. Being able to come back from that deficit gives us the confidence and composure to carry us into our next match."
After leading from the first serve in set one, the Spartans battled with the Redhawks in the second set. There were six lead changes and nine tied scores. Seattle U led 21-17, before San Jose State made a slow charge and tied the score at 22-22 on an O'Reilly kill and took the lead for good at 25-24 on another O'Reilly kill. Blume recorded her third service ace of the match to win the second set 26-24.
"We made some changes during the second set to get us back in the match," said Crespo. "At times, Alex was running the offense as we subbed for Michaela."
San Jose State improves to 10-11 overall and 6-5 in the WAC. The team next plays at Idaho this Saturday evening at 7 p.m.
