Honolulu-Taylor Japhet led the Spartans with seven kills Friday night, but the seventh-ranked Hawaii volleyball team hit .383 en route to a 25-15, 25-12, 25-15 win over San Jose State in a Western Athletic Conference match at the Stan Sheriff Center.
San Jose State hit just .036 in the match as Japhet and Hanah Blume with six kills were the only Spartans with five or more kills. The Spartans had 24 kills on 84 attempts and 21 hitting errors in the match. Hawaii had 45 kills on 94 attempts and only nine hitting errors.
Katie Turner led the Spartan defense with nine digs, followed by Asia Casino with seven digs and Courtney Zellmer with four.
Others contributing for San Jose State Friday night included Caitlin Andrade who had 20 assists and three digs. Brianna Amian and Kylie Miraldi led the team with two block assists.
San Jose State (8-13, 3-5) returns home for the next two weeks. The team plays its final non-conference match of the season this Tuesday, October 19, against Pacific at 7 p.m. The Spartans then face Fresno State next Saturday, October 23, at 1 p.m. Both matches will be played at Spartan Gym, located on the corner of Fourth and San Carlos Streets.
