Las Cruces, N.M.-Savanah Leaf led the San Jose State volleyball team with 10 kills, but the team hit just .034 in the first set in a 25-14, 25-15, 25-19 lost at New Mexico State Saturday afternoon in a Western Athletic Conference match.
Leaf recorded her 10 kills on 25 attempts with six errors and added five digs and two assists.
Two Spartan hitters did hit .400 or better for the match. Krista Miller hit .571 with eight kills on 14 attempts and no hitting errors. Kylie Miraldi hit .400 with seven kills on 15 attempts and just one error
San Jose State started the match hitting just .034 with nine kills on 29 attempts and eight hitting errors. The team then responded the next two sets, hitting .214 in set two (11-5-28) and .278 in set three (15-5-36).
"I am not happy with the way we played the first set," said Spartan head coach Oscar Crespo. "We played much better in the second and third sets, hitting .214 and .278. If we play like those two sets, we can be successful against anyone."
Setter Caitlin Andrade had 31 assists and two digs and also led the team in blocks with two, one solo and one assist. Kiely Pieper led the team with seven digs, while Katie Turner added six. Taylor Japhet and Alex Akana each had four kills in the match.
San Jose State returns home for three matches over seven days. The team hosts Utah State next Wednesday, Idaho on Friday and #8 Hawaii on Tuesday, October 25. All three matches begin at 7 p.m., inside Spartan Gym, located on the corner of Fourth and San Carlos Streets.
