San Jose-Mary Alice O'Reilly was hot Thursday night with her best hitting match of the season as she led the San Jose State volleyball team to a 3-0 win over Denver in a Western Athletic Conference match at Spartan Gym.
O'Reilly hit .800 for the three-set match. She led all hitters with 12 kills on 15 attempts and no hitting errors. After two sets, O'Reilly was on-track to break the school record for hitting percentage in a match. She was hitting .917 (11-0-12), just six points away from the record of .923 set by Cristin Rossman in 1994.
"I was focused on the court, saw what they were giving me on the corner tips and just swung away at other balls," said O'Reilly. "We were really focused tonight. Our passing and serving was tough, and our setter was able to find us for good swings.
"I think this win gives us confidence heading into our Saturday match with New Mexico State. We will carry this momentum into that match."
For the match, the Spartans hit .333 with 43 kills on 87 attempts. Krista Miller added 10 kills as she hit .421 (10-2-19), followed by Samantha O'Connell with eight kills, Alex Akana with seven kills and Hanah Blume with four kills.
Michaela Leonard had 37 assists and a team-best three service aces in the win.
San Jose State improves to 8-9 overall and 4-3 in the WAC. The Spartans host New Mexico State Saturday night in a key WAC showdown. The Aggies suffered their first conference loss Thursday night at Utah State (0-3). The Spartans have not defeated NMSU since the 1994 season.
