San Jose-Asia Casino came off the bench to record 31 assists, and Savanah Leaf had her fourth double-double of the year for the Spartan volleyball team. San Jose State fell to Sacramento State 25-22, 25-17, 18-25, 25-17, Tuesday night in a non-conference match in Spartan Gym.
Casino replaced setter Caitlin Andrade in the second set after Andrade recorded 12 assists to move into seventh place all-time on the San Jose State career assists list. Andrade now has 2,336 assists in her third season in a Spartan uniform.
In addition to her 31 assists, Casino recorded nine digs and added two kills on six attempts. Down 8-1 in the second set, Casino entered the match to try and spark the Spartan offense.
"Coach just wanted a different look on the court for our team," said Casino. We just came together and focused more on the task. We tried different things including setting the middles more."
Leaf led the team with 13 kills and 19 digs on the night. She added two service aces and scored 15 points for the Spartans.
Alex Akana led the Spartan hitters with a .375 hitting percentage. She had 11 kills on 24 attempts and just two hitting errors. She and Samantha O'Connell each led the team with three block assists.
"Asia did a really good job setting up the middles and our passing helped us be successful tonight," said Akana. "She spread the ball out tonight and did whatever she could with the ball. She gave our hitters the opportunity to hit the ball."
After falling behind 0-2, the Spartans came out of the break and took control of the third set at 14-13 on an Akana kill. Casino then served the next three points to open up the set at 17-13, and Leaf recorded the final kill of the set as the Spartans won 25-18.
Krista Miller added 17 digs, eight kills and two block assists on the night as she hit .263. Hanah Blume added six kills and eight digs, while Kylie Miraldi had four kills and a block assist. O'Connell contributed four kills and five digs, while Sarah Griest had three kills and three blocks, one solo and two assists. Katie Turner added six digs and two assists, while Kiely Pieper had five digs.
San Jose State goes on the road this weekend for a Western Athletic Conference match at #9 Hawaii Saturday night at 7 p.m. HDT/10 p.m. PDT.
