Volleyball Loses Heartbreaker Against Fresno State

San Jose-Caitlin Andrade recorded her fifth double-double of the year, but 17 service errors and 10 reception error did not help the San Jose State volleyball team in a 25-17, 26-28, 25-17, 21-25, 15-10 loss to Fresno State in the team's home Western Athletic Conference opener Thursday night at Spartan Gym.

Andrade had 36 assists and 11 digs for the Spartans.  She added five kills, three block assists and an ace in the match.

Kylie Miraldi led the team with 10 kills and hit a team-best .467 in the match.  She also led the team with eight blocks and added three digs and three assists.

After losing the first set 25-17, the two teams battled in the second set with four lead changes and 13 tied scores.  After Fresno State tied the set at 16-16, the two teams tied the score three times and had two lead changes before the Spartans took a 27-26 lead on a Miraldi kills and won the set on a Kiely Pieper service ace.

After falling 25-17 in the third set, San Jose State came back in the fourth set with a 25-21 win.  The team took control of the set with a Samantha O'Connell kill to take a 15-14 lead that the team did not relinquish.  Miraldi recorded her 10th kill of the night to win the set.

San Jose State jumped out to an early 5-1 lead on two O'Connell kills, forcing Fresno State to take a timeout.  The Spartans led 6-1 before Bulldog Christina Lee served seven consecutive points to give Fresno State a 9-6 lead they would not relinquish.

"We are disappointed as a team in this loss," said Spartan head coach Oscar Crespo.  "We played more as team tonight but continued to struggle with our ball handling and serve receive.  In the sets we won, we were in control and fought for the points.  We need to score more at the net but our passing and serve receive tonight made it tough."

Alex Akana added nine kills on 20 attempts and just one hitting error for a .444 hitting percentage.  She added six block assists on the night.  Hanah Blume added five kills and five digs, while Krista Miller had seven kills, nine digs and four block assists.

The Spartans return home this Saturday night for a WAC match against Nevada beginning at 7 p.m., inside Spartan Gym, located on the corner of Fourth and San Carlos Streets.
