SPARTANS BACK ON THE ROAD: San Jose State goes back on the road this weekend for two Western Athletic Conference matches in the Central Time Zone. The team plays at UT Arlington on Thursday and at Louisiana Tech on Saturday. The Spartans are looking to improve upon their 6-8 overall record and 2-2 WAC  mark after winning their first two home WAC matches last week.

TICKETS: Tickets for home Spartan volleyball matches are available at the door the day of the match or payable through Ticketmaster.com. Prices are $5 for adults, $3 for youth 12 and under and $1 for club players in their jersey.
ABOUT UT ARLINGTON: The Mavericks enter Thursday night’s match with a 5-10 overall record and a 1-2 WAC mark after falling twice last week at Denver and New Mexico State. Head coach Diane Seymour is in her ninth season at the school. Shelby Dickerson is averaging 2.81 kills per set and 3.74 digs ps. San Jose State leads the overall series 2-1, facing the team twice at the 1978 AIAW Nationals (1-1) and winning 3-0 in home match in 1990.
ABOUT LOUISIANA TECH: The Lady Techsters begin the week with a 3-12 overall record and an 0-3 WAC mark. The team hosts Utah State Thursday night before the Spartans visit on Saturday. Head coach Adriano de Souza is in his first year at the helm of the program. Ciara Vido leads the team with 104 kills, 2.17 ps. San Jose State has an 16-2 lead in the all-time series and won both meeting during the 2011 season.
SAN JOSE STATE HEAD COACH: Oscar Crespo is in his sixth season as head coach at his alma mater. A 1990 graduate, Crespo was named head coach in March of 2007 as the program’s sixth head coach. He has a 54-107 coaching record in four seasons.
NATIONAL STATISTICS: Through matches on Sept. 23, San Jose State ranks 17th in the nation in digs at 17.64 per set. Penn is the national leader at 21.88 ps. Individually, Michaela Leonard is 24th in assists in 11.37 per set, while Mary Alice O’Reilly is 54th in hitting percentage at .368.
CENTRAL TIME ZONE AGAIN: The Spartans will play in the Central Time Zone for the third time this month. The team opened the month of September at the Texas Tech for a tournament (8/31-9/1), played WAC matches at Texas State (9/13) and at UTSA (9/15) and finish with the two matches this week.
ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAMS: Three Spartans were named to all-tournament teams this season. Hanah Blume was named to the UB Invitational and Lonestar Showdown teams, while Mary Alice O’Reilly received honors at the Lonestar Showdown and the Boise State Invitational. Michaela Leonard picked up her first all- tournament team recognition at the Boise State Invitational.
BEST BLOCKING NIGHT SINCE 2007: The Spartans recorded 17 blocks in the first match of the season for the best blocking night in five years. The team had 1 solo block and 32 block assists against Oral Roberts, the most since 2007 when the Spartans had 19.5 blocks against San Francisco. Last season, the Spartans had 16 blocks in a win over UC Riverside.
DOUBLE-DOUBLES: Four Spartans have recorded 20 double-doubles this season. Setter Michaela Leonard recorded double-doubles in eight matches including five consecutive earlier this month. Hanah Blume has eight. Samantha O’Connell recorded her first this season against Canisius, while Krista Miller had double-doubles against Texas-Pan American, Southern Utah and at UTSA.
NEW SETTER: Freshman Michaela Leonard stepped into the setting role for the Spartans this season. She is averaging 11.35 assists per set which leads the WAC. Leonard recorded a season-best 52 at Texas State and followed that with 50 at UTSA. She also recorded her first collegiate double-double with 47 assists and 12 digs against Canisius and had a streak of five consecutive double-doubles earlier this month.
O’REILLY MAKING IMPACT: After spending most of her freshman season as a key reserve for the Spartans, Mary Alice O’Reilly is making her mark on the team in her sophomore year. She leads the team with 166 kills, 3.07 ps, and blocks with 53, 0.98 ps. O’Reilly started the year with nine blocks against Oral Roberts and was named to two all-tournament teams.
BLUME DIGGIN’ THE BALL: Outside hitter Hanah Blume leads the team with 215, 3.98 ps. She has collected 10 or more digs in every match but one this season and had a career-best 25 at Boise State. Blume has also recorded eight double-doubles on the season because of her digging prowess.
2012 WAC TOURNAMENT: The 2012 WAC Volleyball Tournament will be held Nov. 19-21 at the Convocation Center on the UTSA  Campus. The top-eight seeds advance to the three-day tournament.

UP NEXT: The Spartans return home for two WAC  matches next week. The team hosts Denver on Thursday, October 4, followed by New Mexico State on Saturday, October 6. Both matches begin at 7 p.m., inside Spartan Gym, located on the corner of Fourth and San Carlos Streets.
