Fresno, Calif.The San Jose State volleyball team continued its winning ways Saturday night with a 25-19, 25-15, 25-22 victory over Fresno State in a Western Athletic Conference match.
Kelly Crow led San Jose State with her third double-double of the season as she recorded 11 kills and 10 digs. Colleen Burke hit .500 for the match as she had 11 kills on 16 attempts and only three hitting errors. She added three digs and a block assists. Nia Freeman led the Spartans in blocking with four and added four kills and a dig. Brianna Amian added six kills, two block assists, a dig and an assist.
“This was a tough road trip for us, but I am very please with how successful we were,” said San Jose State head coach Oscar Crespo. “Our middles did a nice job for us tonight. They are starting to connect better with the ball and are closer to where we need them to be numbers wise.
“Kelly had another good match for us tonight and dug well defensively. Niki (Clement) passed well tonight and maintain her composure even though she struggled at the net offensively. Our digging was very nice tonight and we played more of a complete match in the win.”
Defensively, Clement had a team-best 12 digs, while Kristal Tsukano added 10 digs. Courtney Zellmer recorded five digs and an assist for the Spartans.
Brittany Collet started at setter for the first time this season. She finished the match with 28 assists, eight digs, a kill and a service ace.
“Brittany has a presence on the floor when she is setting and gives our team a boost,” said Crespo. “She was steady in setting the middles and in moving the ball around to different hitters.”
San Jose State is now 6-8 overall and 2-2 in the WAC. The Spartans return home Monday night for a conference match against #7 Hawaii. First serve is set for 7 p.m., at Spartan Gym. Tickets are available at the door, beginning at 6 p.m. For more information, call 408-924-SJTX (7568).
