San Jose-Three Spartans recorded double-digit kills, and San Jose State fought-back from a 2-1 deficit to win the final two sets for a 25-17, 21-25, 18-25, 25-15, 15-8 win over Idaho Saturday night at Spartan Gym.
Taylor Japhet led all hitters with a career-best 19 kills. She hit .209 for the match with two digs and an assist. Sarah Griest added a season-high 11 kills and hit .500 for the match with 18 attempts and just two hitting errors. She led the team with two blocks, on solo and one assist. Brianna Amian contributed 11 kills and hit .292 for the match with 24 attempts and four errors. She added 11 digs for her first double-double of the year and one block assist.
San Jose State came out hitting in the first match with a .370 percentage in the first set. The Spartans jumped out to a 3-2 lead and did not look back in the set. Griest scored the final point to give San Jose State the 25-17 win.
The second and third sets went to Idaho. There were eight ties and three lead changes in the second set as the Vandals won 25-21. Idaho came out in the third set, scoring the first point and did not look back with a 25-18 win.
The Spartans jumped out to a 2-0 lead in set four, Idaho tied the match at 2-2, before San Jose State took the lead for good on a Krista Miller kill. Miller also ended the set with a kill to give the Spartans a 25-15 win.
In the fifth set, the two teams battled through seven ties and three lead changes. San Jose State took the lead at 7-6 and won the match on a Idaho attacking error for the 15-8 win.
"This was a great win for us," said Spartan head coach Oscar Crespo. "We found ways to win, especially after being down 2-1. Taylor, Briana and Sarah all had nice matches for us and found their confidence throughout the match.
"Our match was also a confidence builder that we can win a five-set match. It was nice to see our team come out in the first set and set the tempo towards this win."
Others contributing to the win included Alex Akana with nine kills. Katie Turner led the team with 18 digs, followed by Asia Casino added 10 kills. Caitlin Andrade added 50 assists and six digs, while Courtney Zellmer added four digs. Miller came off the bench with five kills, while Hanah Blume recorded nine digs and three kills.
The Spartans go on the road for three matches next week, starting at Nevada Thursday night. The team then plays at Utah State on Saturday and at Idaho on Monday, October 4. All three matches begin at 7 p.m. local time.
