Volleyball Loses Five-Set Heartbreaker In WAC Opener

San Jose-The San Jose State volleyball team opened the Western Athletic Conference portion of the schedule with an exciting match inside Spartan Gym Thursday evening, but the excitement was tempered as Boise State jumped out to an early lead in the fifth set and held on for a 23-25, 25-21, 25-19, 22-25, 15-9 win over the Spartans.

San Jose State came out strong in the first set, winning 25-23, after taking control of the set on an Alex Akana kill at 23-22. Hanah Blume scored set point with one of her13 kills on the night.

Boise State then won sets two, 25-21, and three, 25-19, setting up a must-win situation for San Jose State in the fourth set.

The fourth set found the Spartans down 6-1, forcing San Jose State head coach Oscar Crespo to take a timeout. The Spartans then slowly chipped away at the Bronco lead, tying the match at 10-10 on a Boise State hitting error. The two teams had five tied scores and three lead changes before San Jose State took the lead at 16-15 on another Akana kill.

The fifth set belonged to Boise State as they opened up a 6-1 lead and took the set 15-9. The Spartans got as close as 12-8 on a Krista Miller kill.

Akana led San Jose State with 16 kills. She hit .419 for the match with 31 attempts and just three hitting errors. She added five digs in the match.

"I didn't expect the slide to work tonight, but once I got it down, we just kept going back to it," said Akana. "We played really good defense tonight. We kept a lot of balls alive tonight, and our passers stayed where they were supposed to. We will come out stronger on Saturday."

Blume added 13 kills, six digs and three assists, while Miller added 11 kills, one dig and a solo block.

Kylie Miraldi, making her Spartan Gym debut for the 2010 season, added nine kills on the night and led the team with five blocks, one solo and four assists.

Katie Turner led the Spartans with 23 digs and had four assists, while Asia Casino added 10 digs and a team-best three service aces. Courtney Zellmer added nine digs and an ace. Caitlin Andrade had 50 assists, seven digs and two block assists.

The Spartans continue at home Saturday evening with a WAC match against Idaho. Start time is 7 p.m., inside Spartan Gym, located on the corner of Fourth and San Carlos Streets.
