Logan, Utah-In the opening match of the 2011 Western Athletic Conference volleyball season, San Jose State fell at Utah State, 25-18, 25-20, 25-12, Thursday night at the Smith Spectrum in Logan, Utah.
Alex Akana led the Spartans with nine kills and hit .500 for the match with nine kills on 16 attempts and just one hitting error. She and Brianna Amian each recorded two block assists to lead the team.
The Spartans hit just .149 for the match with 35 kills but 20 errors in 101 attempts. The team did out-dig the Aggies, 41-40, but had just 3.5 blocks in the match.
Savanah Leaf and Katie Turner each recorded had a team-best seven digs. Leaf added five kills in the match. Four Spartans each had four kills - Taylor Japhet, Brianna Amian, Kylie Miraldi and Hanah Blume. Caitlin Andrade contributed 27 assists, five digs and three kills in the match.
"This was a very disappointing match for us tonight," said Spartan head coach Oscar Crespo. "We did not serve-receive well in the match and did not take care of the ball on our side of the net. We were most successful when we were able to go to our middles, and Alex did a nice job tonight in the offense."
