San Jose-With her 11th kill of the night, Alex Akana let the San Jose State volleyball fans go home happy as the Spartans defeated Idaho, 25-15, 25-14, 28-26, in the Western Athletic Conference home opener at Spartan Gym.
San Jose State dominated the first two sets, leading from start to finish in each set, 25-15, 25-14. The third set found the two teams battling back and forth with eight lead changes and 13 tie scores. The Spartans took the lead for good at 27-26 on a Vandal hitting error and won as Akana put the ball down for the win.
"We were very prepared and had a lot a confidence in this match," said Akana. "It is hard coming back from the 10-minute break, and we had to limit our errors in the third set and be confident in ourselves. I was connecting with Michaela tonight and her confidence in me helped me to put the ball away."
The Spartans played at home for the first time all season after spending the first four weeks on the road. It was also the first time San Jose State had played even in the Pacific Time Zone after playing in each of the three time zones this season.
"We have been yearning to play at home after being gone for a month," said Spartan Hanah Blume. "Nothing is better than coming home and playing such a good team, playing well and having such a great crowd to support us. It is a great feeling."
The win also marked the first time San Jose State has swept a match from Idaho since the 2006 season.
As a team, the Spartans hit .337 with 48 kills on 101 attempts and just 14 hitting errors. Blume led the team with a .435 percentage and a team-best 12 kills on 23 attempts and just two errors. She also had her eighth double-double with 13 digs.
Three other Spartans had double-digit kills. Akana had 11 kills and hit .667 with 15 attempts and only one error. Mary Alice O'Reilly had 10 kills, hit .368 and led the team with four block assists. Samantha O'Connell added 10 kills, seven digs and two blocks.
Michaela Leonard made her collegiate debut in Spartan Gym at setter and recorded 43 assists and four digs. Krista Miller added four kills, 11 digs and four blocks, while libero Kiely Pieper had a team-bewst 15 digs.
San Jose State continues its homestand this Saturday night with a WAC match against Seattle U. First serve is set for 7 p.m., inside Spartan Gym, located on the corner of Fourth and San Carlos Streets.
